Basic Facts About The Korean Language

Korean language is a dynamic language that is spoken natively by 74 million people and is rated 11th in the world in terms of the number of speakers. While it is considered to be the most difficult language for an English speaker to become fluent in, after a few Korean lessons the basics are relatively easy to pick up and are easier to learn than other Asian languages.

Korean is the official language of both North and South Korea and can also be found spoken in China, Japan, Central Asia and the United States of America within the ethnic Korean communities. South Korea has 5 of the major dialects spoken, and North Korea has 1. Because Korean is natively homogenous, it is understandable among the speakers from different areas.

The Korean alphabet called “Hangul,” consists of 24 letters – 14 consonants and 10 vowels – written in blocks of 2 to 5 characters. The language is considered by certain linguists to belong to the Altaic language class thus relating to the Turkish, Mongolian and Manchu languages. Apart from this association, Korean language is similar to the Japanese language in terms of grammar and to the Chinese regarding vocabulary.
